አንጋፋው ደራሲ ፍቅረማርቆስ ደስታ በሐመር ሕዝብ ባህል ላይ ባተኮሩት እጅግ ተወዳጅ በሆኑት ተከታታይ ‘ኤትኖግራፊክ’ ልብወለድ ድርሰቶቹ ይታወቃል። ፍቅረማርቆስ ከአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርስቲ በኬሚስትሪ ተመርቆ በመምህርነት ወደ ጂንካ በማቅናት በደቡብ ኦሞ ወረዳ ለበርካታ ዓመታት ሰርቷል።
በደቡብ ኦሞ ቆይታውም ከሐመር ማህበረሰብ ጋር ተቀላቅሎ በመኖር በሕዝቡ ውብ ባህል ተማረከ። ፍቅረማርቆስ ታዲያ በማድነቅ ብቻ አልታቀበም። ከመምህርነቱ ጎን ለጎን ያየውንና የሰማውን ለመክተብ ወሰነ። በ1987 ዓ.ም “ከቡስካ በስተጀርባ” የተባለውን ዝነኛ የበኩር ልብወለዱን አሳተመ። ከዛም ተወዳጅ ልብወለዶቹን “ኢቫንጋዲ” (1990 ዓ.ም) እና “የዘርሲዎች ፍቅር” (1991 ዓ.ም) አወጣ።
በሚቀጥሉት አመታትም አትኩሮቱን ከደቡብ ኦሞ በማዞር “አቻሜ” (1992 ዓ.ም) እና “የንሥር ዐይን” (1993 ዓ.ም) የተሰኙ ታሪካዊ ልቦለዶቹን ለአንባቢዎቹ አቀረበ። “Land of the Yellow Bull” (1995 ዓ.ም) የተሰኘ የእንግሊዘኛ ልብወለድም አሳትሟል። ይህንን ተከትሎም በደቡብ ኦሞ ሕዝቦች ላይ ያተኮሩ ዶኩሜንተሪ ፊልሞች – “Becoming a Man in Africa” (2005) እና “Black Samurai” (2006) ላይም ተሳትፏል። ከኤትኖግራፊክ እና ታሪካዊ ልብወለድ ሥራዎቹ ባሻገርም “ጃገማ ኬሎ – የበጋው መብረቅ” (2001 ዓ.ም) በሚል ርእስ የጀግናው አርበኛ ጃገማ ኬሎን የሕይወት ታሪክ በተለመደው ውብ አቀራረቡ አስነብቦናል።
አሁን ደግሞ “የሚሳም ተራራ” የተሰኘ ድንቅ መጽሐፉን ለዓመታት በጉጉት ሲጠብቁ ለነበሩት አንባቢዎቹ ይዞ ቀርቧል። በዚህም የግለታሪክ መጽሐፉ ፍቅረማርቆስ የሕይወት ጉዞውን ትዕይንታዊ በሆነ ውብ ቋንቋ በመተረክ የትዝታ ብልጭታዎቹን (ከኢትዮጵያ እስከ አሜሪካ) ሳይሰስት ያጋራል።
ፍቅረማርቆስ ደስታ በረዥም የሥራ ዘመኑ ከተሰጡት በርካታ ሽልማቶች መካከል “የኢትዮጵያ ጥናትና ምርምር ፍኩይ ሽልማት” (1986 ዓ.ም) እና “የዓለምአቀፍ የአእምሮ ንብረት ድርጅት ሽልማት” (1997 ዓ.ም) ይገኙበታል። ባለፉት ዓመታትም ኑሮውን ባደረገበት በአሜሪካ በአንትሮፖሎጂ ዘርፍ ቦስተን ከተማ የድኅረ ምረቃ ትምህርቱን ሲከታተል ቆይቷል።
Fikremarkos Desta is renowned for his ethnographic novels focusing on the south western Ethiopian people. He transitioned into a successful writing career after studying chemistry in Addis Ababa University. His ethnographic trilogy, which delves into the lives of the Hamar, Kwegu, and Arbore people in southwestern Ethiopia, has garnered widespread acclaim.
Fikremarkos has penned five acclaimed novels in Amharic: “Kebuska Bestejerba,” “Evangadi,” “Ya Zersiewoch Fikir,” “Achamie,” and “Ya Nisir Ayen.” Notably, his sixth book, “Land of the Yellow Bull,” marks his debut in the English language. The title directly translates from the Hamar phrase “Wake Alepenon,” roughly meaning “Land of the Heroic People.”
Having resided among these communities for a decade, Fikremarkos considers it a privilege to portray their harmonic way of life. His writing underscores themes of love, purity, friendship, and serenity. Fikremarkos optimistically believes that promoting cultural dialogue and embracing a tranquil lifestyle can dispel misunderstandings.
As a writer, Fikremarkos refuses to confine himself to a single style, boasting a diverse and impactful body of work that offers a unique perspective on the beauty of various cultures.
Fikremarkos has also participated in the making of two documentary films. “Becoming a Man in Africa” (2005) and “Black Samurai” (2006). Prior to his new memoir, he earned critical acclaim for his biography of the Ethiopian patriot “Jagama Kello.”
In his latest memoir, “Yemisam Terara,” he explores a new genre by encapsulating his lived memories into poignant short essays.
